fields of the studio

In 1963, after having acquired experience in shipbuilding field and after having directed a marine company for some years, Capt Oberdan Giorgetti gave life to what is today, the Studio Tecnico Navale Giorgetti. In 1974, Dr Manilio Giorgetti joined the team later becoming its legal representative and managing director.

The studio has been operating for well over 50 years in the maritime and nautical fields for what mainly concerns averages, with particular emphasis to investigation about causes, their evaluation and attribution of responsibility\liability in collision cases.
Our deep understanding of the operating characteristics of the merchant ships allows us to survey these units with the aim of checking their actual conditions and possible deficiencies.

To the satisfaction of our mandants we carry out condition and pre-entry surveys according to the guidelines as set out by The Joint Hull 2006/010 Committee and by the Maintenance Check Lists as required by the Classification Societies, as well as in accordance with JH143 as regard to shipyard condition survey.

Our activities have been further extended to the appraisal of commercial values of the merchant fleet, fishing vessels and pleasure crafts.

With the support of electrical and electronic experts, we have reached some extremely positive results with regards to limiting such claims to on board plants and installations, privileging repairs instead of renewal of machinery or equipment. Sometimes, we apply to specialized companies which are able to recover burnt out equipments due to fire or thermal shock or damaged by contact with water and\or other extinguishing elements.

The studio, when deemed necessary, resorts to the assistance of an external, but organic, fire expert [whose expertise is confirmed as frequently called upon to act as Court surveyor] especially when the causes of the fires, the way they were ignited and the negligence which may have characterised the extinguishing operation or the lack of means used to fight these are to be investigated.

The studio staff has been integrated in order to give consultations in the field of combined sea transport with particular reference to vessels carrying heavy cargoes, as confirmed by frequent appointments received from National and International Insurance Companies.

A further area of our activity is relevant to surveying damages to vessels occasioned during loading and\or unloading operations, as well as to structures, equipments and fittings of berths\quays used by bulk, tankers, LPG and chemical carriers.

Our pleasure crafts experts have, over the years, become acquainted with all those new innovations that have so characterised this field, as regard both plants and machinery installations, propulsion, rigging and new composite materials.

The background so acquired allows us - with the support of scientific knowledges and records gained from past personal experiences - to deal with a field that, also in consideration of continuous increase of values of pleasure crafts either newly built or in service, [which often are not so far from those of merchant ships] need professional competence and adequate training.

Considering the ever more frequent use on the pleasure crafts of composite materials, if necessary our studio avails itself of the cooperation of a group of experts whose knowledge and experience is confirmed by the fact that they are involved in the hull building of the racing crafts running in the America's Cup.

The studio generally works on commission for most of the Insurance Companies on the Italian market, some Foreign Insurance Companies, Financial Shipping Institutions, Shipowners and Lawyers, [who require our assistance as technical advisor] and by various sections of the Magistrature [Courts and Courts of Appeal].

On certain occasions, we have had to decline appointments from P&I Clubs in those cases where a conflict of interests would have arisen with the Hull & Machinery Underwriters, whose relationship we have always wished to privilege.
